Gus gives me one of his golden-eyed stares from across the yard. He’s growing up fast!

  1. Handsome little fellow you have there. Hard to judge what size he really is. I am not familiar with this breed. I’d bet he can be a handful come playtime.

    • Hi William! I should probably try to take some pictures of Gus next to something that shows his size to better scale. Until then, I’d say he’s probably about 14.5 inches at the withers or from the ground to the base of his neck. I was hoping he’d maybe top 16 inches, but I think that might be wishful thinking. I have to say the only thing I’d change about Gus is his size … I was hoping he’d get closer to the 18″ mark than not, but that’s doubtful. When standing next to me his head is about knee-height to me, his back a little less. Certainly taller than he was when we first got him and he’s finally growing into his ears and big feet! Rat Terriers come in two sizes, the mini, which is anything under 13″ tall at the withers and anything over 13″ and under 18″ is considered a “Standard” size. So Gus will be a “Standard,” but he’ll probably be on the smaller end of the scale. Since this is my first Rat Terrier I’m not sure how much more growth to expect, but he’s a few weeks shy of 6 months now, so he might still have a little more growing to do! He weighs about 15.5 pounds and his breeder told me they usually gain about a pound for every inch of height … the males maybe a tad more because they’re all muscle. So we’ll see!

    • Thanks Rhonda! We think he’s a cutie too, but we’re probably just a tad biased! šŸ˜‰
